Department of Chemistry Computer Laboratory

California State University, San Bernardino

Updated 12/20/00

By completing this form, you are agreeing to abide by the rules and policies of the Chemistry Department Computing Laboratory, as well as the California State University, San Bernardino policies adopted herein. Abuse of any of the facilites, or of Internet access, will result in a revocation of Laboratory privileges (by inactivation of your account).

Your Chemistry Laboratory account will give you access to the Internet (your email account on or off campus through NCSA Telnet and FTP, as well as the World Wide Web through Netscape or Internet Explorer), as well as privileges for printing and storing data on the local network. You must log on to Windows NT each time you enter the laboratory, and log off when you leave. The NT Server tracks all use of facilities, including excessive printing, attempts to tamper with other accounts and software, and inappropriate Internet use. The Network Administrator and Department Computer Committee have access to these records.

The following guidelines will be used to determine appropriate behavior. In addition to these guidelines, all Federal, State, and local laws, as well as CSU System and CSUSB regulations will be enforced.

  1. Passwords are confidential. The user is responsible for all activity that originates from his/her account. Remember to log off each time you leave the lab. Do not give anyone else your password. If you forget your password, inform the System Administrator, who will aid you in accessing your account. Any attempt to "crack" passwords is prohibited.
  2. Resource allocation is controlled and monitored by the System Administrator. Each account is assigned a directory and file storage space. Attempts to write outside the assigned space or to exceed limits are prohibited. Users may not "give away" extra disk space to others. Users may, however, write to, and read from common "class" folders. Excessive printing is prohibited.
  3. All data stored on the Chemistry Department Laboratory Server and workstations will be considered confidential. It is illegal to view or tamper with any electronic data for which you do not have explicit authorization. Access to accounts or disclosure of confidential information, for any purpose other than technical problem resolution by appropriate system administrators, will be reviewed by the Chemistry department committee, and allowed only when required by law, or in the case of suspected illegal activity. Users must respect the rights of others, including complying with University harassment policies. Material which is lewd, indecent or obscene, or which violates University harassment policies many not be stored, printed, or displayed on University equipment.
  4. Alteration of any Files, Programs or other data stored on workstations or the Server is considered vandalism. Any attempts to deliberately altar system files or structure is considered destruction of University property. Penalties for doing so may include contacting the Student Conduct Officer, in addition to revocation of rights to use the facility.
  5. Internet access (Netscape, Internet Explorer, FTP, Telnet) is for authorized access only. Under no circumstances will unauthorized login to other computers through a Chemistry Laboratory account be allowed. In addition, users must remember that all postings to the Internet are public, and that inappropriate postings reflect on both the student and the campus.
  6. General: Students may not use their accounts for financial gain. Students are responsible for contributing to the security of the facility by logging off when done, protecting access to their passwords, closing the room when they are the last user to leave (even if during daytime hours), not "propping" the door to an empty room open, and reporting any suspicious activity to a Chemistry Department representative.
  7. I agree to abide by these guidelines and request an account in the Chemistry Computing Laboratory.

Chemistry Computer Laboratory

Instructions for Students

Updated 12/20/2000

  1. To attain an account, complete the top of the first page, and sign the second page of the form, indicating your willingness to abide by the rules of the Chemistry computer laboratory. Obtain a faculty member's signature prior to turning in your form.
  2. Turn in your form to Ken Makino in the stockroom. Plan for the account to take about 3 days before it is activated (ask Mr. Makino for an estimated time until activated). In the mean time, you may be allowed to use the generic accounts; see your chemistry instructor for details.
  3. Once your account is active, your login id is "first initial last name", all one word and all lower case; for example if your name is Chris Kringle, then your login id is ckringle. (Occasionally you will be notified that your login id is already assigned, and will be given an alternate id. Your instructor, or Mr. Makino, will notify you).
  4. Your first password is "happy". You must change this password the first time you log in. Be sure to remember your new password and keep it secure. If you forget your password, you must have it re-initiallized to "happy". Contact Mr. Makino.
  5. You are given a storage space on the server, which appears on your computer as the "Z:" drive. This storage space shows up any time you log in on any chemistry network computer (PS-202 or 319). Only you, and the administrator, have access to this storage space.
  6. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for any abuses that occur on your login account. Be sure to log out each time you use the lab to avoid unauthorized use of your account. Logs are kept of pages printed, web sites visited, etc. so that improprieties can be traced by the administrator. Be sure to pick a password that is not too easy for another to guess.
  7. Finally, additional information and updates are posted on the web page that appears in Internet Explorer when you log in.
