Dr. David F. Maynard
Professor and Department Chair


Prof. Maynard received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Graduating with Departmental Honors in 1976 from Cal State College, San Bernardino, as it was known then. He subsequently when on to earn his Secondary Science/Math Teaching Credential, a Master of Science in Chemistry from CSU Long Beach and a Ph.D. in Organic Synthesis from UC Riverside.

As an undergraduate at CSU San Bernardino and resident of Joshua House in Serrano Village, Prof. Maynard worked in the chemistry stock room, university learning center and performed researched in both biochemistry and analytical chemistry. During his graduate studies, Prof. Maynard was awarded the Ken L. Johnson Outstanding Thesis Award, the Outstanding Teaching Assistant in Chemistry and a UC Chancellor Graduate Research Fellowship. Since coming back to his alma mater at CSU San Bernardino, he has been awarded the Student-Athlete Council Award twice, the CNS Outstanding Faculty for Instructionally Related Activity, Outstanding Faculty Advisor for a Campus Organization, a McNair Scholar Mentor and the 2002 Distinguished Alumnus Award for the College of Natural Sciences He has been an active member of Sigma Xi, the National Research Society, the Council on Undergraduate Research, Phi Beta Delta, Honor Society for International Scholars, Phi Kapp Phi and the Alumni Association. He has been Chair of the Department of Chemistry since 1999.

Besides teaching a variety of chemistry course, Prof. Maynard has developed an active research program that to date has included over 35 undergraduates students. His area of research is Natural Product Chemistry, and has worked on projects isolating natural pesticides from avocados. He is co-founder/director of the Laboratory for Ancient Materials (LAMA), and has analyzed several important Mayan and Aztec artifacts for the Library of Congress and the National University in Mexico City.
